Diabetes is a growing worldwide health issue. According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), “Diabetes is fast becoming the epidemic of the 21st century.” IDF said in 2006 that 246 million people worldwide are affected by diabetes. That number is expected to grow to 380 million people in twenty years.
People are more prone to developing type 2 if they naturally have a shortage of insulin supply in their bodies. This is the genetic portion of what causes diabetes.
Diabetes is a chronic disease; it is a situation when there is too much of glucose in the human body. Insulin a hormone secreted by pancreas regulates glucose in the human body. Pancreas have four types of cells which are collectively known as Islets of Langerhans. Among four types, the beta cells are responsible for secretion of insulin.
Over time, the body begins to respond less to the production of insulin due to too much fat surrounding cells. Blood sugars remain too high and symptoms begin to appear. They begin mildly with signs like excessive need to use the restroom, sudden weight loss, lack of energy and blurred vision. These are all direct results of off kilter blood sugar levels.
If you are overweight you risk developing diabetes. Reduce the amount of food on your plate so you gradually eat less and start to lose weight. Drink a glass of plain water or a sugar-free drink before your meal to take the edge of any hunger pains. If you are diabetic, losing weight is important to control your diabetes and to lead a healthier life.
Diabetic patients would need to watch how much they eat when they have type 2 diabetes. Weight control is very important with diabetes. The further you lower your weight towards the healthy zone, the better control you will likely get over your diabetes. Losing weight lowers the amount of insulin resistance also. Consuming the right types of foods in the right proportions at the right times allows those with diabetes to eat just about anything they want. It is just a wake up call to adopt healthy eating habits.
Being a diabetic does not mean that you no longer can enjoy your food, it just means that you make healthy choices. One of the biggest changes that you can make is to not eat any processed foods such as potato chips, cookies, cakes, muffins, etc.
Opt for complex carbohydrates, which you can find in whole wheat pasta, whole wheat bread, brown rice, and other whole grain products. Complex carbohydrates take a longer time to digest and can thus provide a more stable source of energy. On the other hand, try to lessen your intake of foods with simple carbohydrates such as refined sugar because they can cause you to gain weight and may lead to diabetes flare up.
A patient with diabetes type 2 needs to combine carbohydrates, protein, and fats. He or she definitely needs to control the intake of carbohydrates, which are processed into glucose – the source of the body’s energy.
